Amicus the union has 100,000 members in its health sector. They cover all the professions employed by the NHS and other health providers.
Within the health sector are professional groups and associations which address their own particular membership group and professional agenda. SSHA is such a professional body.
The professional groups and associations are supported by a team of professional officers. The groups supported by this team are the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors Association (CPHVA), the Mental Health Nurses Association (MHNA), the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists (GHP), the College of Health Care Chaplains (CHCC), the Society of Sexual Health Advisers (SSHA), the Medical Practitioners' Union (MPU) and the Hospital Physicists' Association (HPA).
Carol English is the Professional Officer representing the interests of SSHA within Amicus and working to take forward the professional agenda for sexual health advisers.
Carol has a wide remit, also having national responsibility for doctors (MPU), physicists (HPA), health care chaplains (CHCC), as well as independent practitioners. Carol is also the person who deals with Professional Liability Insurance for particular professions within the health sector (including SSHA members), and who liaises with other professional associations on closer working and association agreements with Amicus.
Carol's aims for SSHA are-
- to raise the profile of Sexual Health Advisers at national level,
- to raise the profile of Sexual Health Advisers within the Health Sector of Amicus,
- to promote the professionalism of Sexual Health Advisers,
- to build on the importance of the public health role of health advisers,
- to work towards the regulation of the profession, leading to statutory regulation,
- to ensure that health advisers are valued and fairly rewarded for the work they do in the NHS.
