Dear Friends
Tomorrow, if you work in the public sector, you may be on strike. Or, if you don’t work in the sector, you will know somebody close to you who has decided to take industrial action.

These are our friends, neighbours, colleagues. They care for our children, sick and elderly. They keep our nation safe and our communities clean.

But the government is waging a campaign of distortion against our public sector workers. So, on the eve of this historic day of action, Unite has produced a short film. This is the truth.

Click here to view the film http://youtu.be/-x2aPIBKkOk It is short, only 3 minutes. Please watch it and share it with your friends, post it on Facebook or link it on all your emails.

Don’t forget to also text your message of support to 86888 and updates from where you are on November 30th, 2011 – it’s free.

It is time the truth was told.

Thank you
Colleagues,

As you know Unite members employed across our public services have voted ‘YES’ for industrial action in the ongoing dispute over imposed changes to their pension schemes.

Industrial action will commence from 00.01 on Wednesday, November 30th concluding at midnight.

Following this vote, Unite is calling on all members employed by an employer where we have secured a YES vote and notified the employer of our intention to take strike action, to join with colleagues from other public sector trade unions in sending a very clear message in support of your pensions on November 30th, 2011.

Encourage your colleagues to take action to defend their pension.

This is an official dispute. It is supported by the TUC and we are working with them and other unions taking action on various protests and other events in towns and cities across the UK on the day.

Visit the Unite website to see the map of action where you can see where events are taking place all across the country. If there is an event taking place in your area that is not included on our map, please contact saba.mozakka@unitetheunion.org

You can calculate how much you stand to lose using the pensions calculator at:www.unitetheunion.org

Defend your pension on November 30th, 2011

Unite has also published its ‘dossier of hypocrisy’ today, exposing the pensions of cabinet ministers at the heart of the coalition’s attack on public sector workers. Unite experts found:

George Osborne, the architect of the government’s austerity programme, would only have to work a year and a half to earn a typical public sector workers’ pension of £5,600 in retirement.

Francis Maude and Danny Alexander are leading negotiations with the unions on pensions. A typical public sector worker would have to work three working lifetimes to earn Francis Maude’s pension and two working lifetimes to earn young Danny Alexander’s.

A local government worker would have to work an staggering 124 years to get a pension equal to what Eric Pickles could retire on in 2015.

Andrew Lansley’s pension is almost ten times bigger than an average health worker who is accused by this government of having a ‘gold-plated pension’.

The pensions of these cabinet ministers have been examined by Unite’s pensions experts and compared to typical public sector workers who face a massive attack on their pensions. The calculations are based on ministers’ pension pots if they were to retire at the end of the current term of office in 2015.

In this year’s review attention was placed on the impact of the proposed changes to the NHS in England on matters of patient safety and professional conduct which will require a regulatory response. Recommendations are made to the regulators and to the departments of health across the UK.

Dear Stakeholder Network member,

I am writing to draw your attention to the publication of CHRE’s annual performance review of the health professional regulators. The Performance Review 2010/2011; changing regulation in changing times was laid before Parliament, along with our Annual Report and Accounts on 29th June.

The Performance Review report (and summary document) can be found at www.chre.org.uk/satellite/402 and the Annual Report and Accounts can be found at www.chre.org.uk/about/290/

The Performance Review evaluates the performance of the nine health professional regulators in the four key areas of statutory responsibility – guidance and standards, education and training, registration, and fitness to practise. This performance review has identified that most of the regulators are performing well across their regulatory functions. It has also identified some areas of concern in relation to the performance of some of the regulators – those regulators are already taking action to address those areas of concern.

We highlight in the review some areas where we are looking for the regulators to improve their performance, including the way in which some of them deal with drink-drive /drug-related convictions, as well as their processes for investigating complaints about themselves.

In this year’s review we also draw attention to the impact of the proposed changes to the NHS in England on matters of patient safety and professional conduct which will require a regulatory response. We make recommendations to the regulators and to the departments of health across the UK.

In line with government requirements, the reports are only available electronically. They are also available in Welsh.

Kind regards,

The new ConDem Government is committed to slashing public spending and accelerating and implementing privatisation on a scale we haven’t seen before and Unite believes that the policies of this Government threaten to destroy the NHS that we have always been so proud of.

The Unite 4 OUR NHS campaign has been launched to oppose the cuts and privatisations in the NHS and fight to protect NHS workers terms and conditions and pensions. Unite’s campaigning has had a huge impact locally and nationally in both halting and slowing down threatened NHS privatisations and we must continue to support our activists in their local campaigns fighting the break-up and fragmentation of our NHS.

We want a reversal of the damaging competitive market that exists in England, that pits health services against one another – instead in the forthcoming White Paper we are threatened with the disbanding of Strategic Health Authorities and the bulk of the NHS budget being handed over to private companies to spend and profit from through ‘GP commissioning’. Even the NHS Confederation has described this as “potentially the biggest change in the history of the NHS”.

Unite believes that the NHS should be a comprehensive, universal service publically funded and accountable and managed as a public service for the benefit of all. This world class organisation should not be carved up for the benefit of private profit and now is the time for us to fight for our National Health Service, to ensure that it will be there for future generations.

Join our campaign and send the message loud and clear to the government – Don’t destroy our NHS!

Please take one minute to send a letter or an email to your MP, telling them why you are opposed to the White Paper and why they should be too, as these changes will mean:

More wasteful bureaucracy – not less

Less money for treating patients

More money into the profits of private healthcare companies

More inequity of a postcode lottery on healthcare services
