SSHA National Professional Committee are asking for feedback on the newly developed SSHA National Sexual Health Adviser Competencies.

Consultation Period 1^st November 2011 to 31^st of January 2012

Please use the following headers when responding to the consultation on this document and ensure all comments are received by 31^st of January 2012:

• Do you feel this will be a useful tool in practice for both new entrants to the profession and experienced Sexual Health Advisers?
• If you have comments on specific competencies or any part of the document, please reference the particular statement(s) to which you are responding. Example – page, paragraph number, line numbers
• Are there any other areas that you feel it would be useful to include with regards expected competencies of Sexual Health Advisers or anything else in the framework? If so it would be useful to outline these specifically and where you feel they may sit in the document.
• Please if applicable provide reference(s) to any evidence used to support your agreement or points for discussion.

The day will begin at 10:30 and end at 16:30. This should allow members to travel to and from the conference on the same day.

This year’s SSHA conference will be at the Hilton Hotel Belfast from September 17th – 19th 2010.

We work within a changing NHS and in particular face daily challenges to maintain a quality, professional Sexual Health Adviser service within the current sexual health arena.

CPD is an important part of the ongoing professional  agenda for all Sexual Health Advisers, and you are strongly encouraged to attend the SSHA conference this year.

Please note that for the third year running we have not raised the conference fee and feel this is important for members in the current NHS financial climate.

This is the first time the conference has ever been held in Ireland, and it will be an opportunity to hear about the cultural influences and challenges that we face working in sexual health. Dawn Purvis, a member of the legislative assembly (MLA),  will be opening the conference. Her work involves supporting advocacy groups on often controversial sexual health issues.

Interest in presenting has already started and among the topics will be:

• Women’s experience of HIV in pregnancy
• Cultural influences and stigma and sexuality
• LGV and HIV transmission
• The issue of  abortion provision in Northern Ireland
• Supervision and health advising
